Language Learning at WISS Grows With Your Child

WISS students develop language skills in purposeful stages. Each stage has a distinct purpose, depth, and place in a student's education.

A framework, not a subject

Built for a genuinely international future.

There is no better environment to develop academic English than a school where 50+ nationalities use it as their shared language every day.

At WISS, language learning is not a single subject on a timetable. It is a framework that runs across every year of a student's education — structured, progressive, and built for a genuinely international future.

  • English as the medium of instruction
  • Mandarin compulsory from Early Years to Grade 10
  • Third language from Grade 6
  • Mother-tongue development supported throughout
Language at WISS

Four strands.

English as the Medium of Instruction

English is the medium of instruction across all subjects and year groups. Students from non-English-speaking backgrounds are supported through our EAL program from day one, so language level is never a barrier to academic progress. By Secondary, the vast majority operate fully in academic English regardless of their first language at home.

Chinese Language Learning

Mandarin is compulsory for all WISS students from Early Years to Grade 10. Classes are structured by proficiency level — beginner, intermediate, and native — so every student is genuinely challenged and appropriately supported.

Third Language Opportunities

From Grade 6, students choose a second language to study within the IB Language B framework. Options include French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Korean.

Mother Tongue

Protecting a child's home language is a developmental necessity. Children who maintain strong roots in their first language consistently develop stronger academic language in their additional languages. Cognitive flexibility, reading depth, and metalinguistic awareness all build on a secure foundation in the language a child knows best.
